Ok, I have read a lot of books in my short little life, but none of spoken to me quite like this one. I found myself at times wanting to be just like Novella (Writer and Star of the book) and at other times thinking she was/is absolutely nuts!!! Novella is originally from Idaho, but went to the University of Washington and lived in Seattle for quite a few years. She and her boyfriend moved to Oakland, because everyone told them not too! I found this hilarious and something I would totally do. Now they did not just live in Oakland, but they lived in the GHETTO of Oakland, complete with the homeless, gangs and the crazies! I found myself laughing out loud at this book as I read. When Novella and Bill move to Oakland they look at this apartment and are drawn to it, because of the vacant lot next to the apartment building. For me I could see Anthony and I having the same conversation that Novella and Bill had about the apartment. The house that we currently live in, we picked because of the yard and the garden space, just like Novella. At first, Novella just has a garden but like most hobbies she gets more and more adventurous. This book takes you through her journey of starting with just a garden, then she gets chickens, duck and Turkeys. She had already had laying chickens, but she decides to get some meat birds and ultimately the lone surviving Turkey; Harold, is her first farm kill. She then stumbles upon some rabbits and lastly the ultimate farm animals...PIGS!
I can not say enough good things about this book. I could not put it down because I wanted to see what she was going to do next. I found her completely nuts at times, but I also could see myself being that nuts! Maybe I already am?
Nuts! yes maybe a little....but who isn't these days. If we didn't have all of our crazy little hobbies what would we do....really go nuts! So as long as we all stay a little on the normal side I think we will be okay! At least we have beauty and food from our craziness. I am going to try and get this book it sounds like a fun read!
